To do that intentionally to your body defies common sense. Unfortunately, when it comes to our weight, common sense isn’t all that common.
The Dangers of Rapid Weight Loss
There are a number of reasons why rapid weight loss is not recommended by reputable doctors or dietitians. Depending on how that weight loss is achieved, it can cause a variety of physical problems, many of them permanent. In extreme cases, it can also lead to death.
One way to lose weight rapidly is to severely limit calorie intake. A normal human being generally needs between 1500 and 1800 calories to function. Anything less than that may mean that you aren’t consuming all the nutrients needed for your body to function properly. Although severely limiting calories will cause you to lose pounds, you may also lose hair and teeth along with it. Since you fill up on one food, you don’t necessarily feel hungry, and since your body can only do so much with kumquats (or whatever the food of the week is), it just disposes of the rest and you lose weight. However, since your body wasn’t designed to run on just one food, it basically ends up starving for all the other nutrients it is being deprived of.
And the most common danger of rapid weight loss is rapid weight gain after you give up on whatever crazy fad you were trying to follow. The “yo-yo effect” comes from the fact that your body has learned that there are possible food shortages ahead, so it goes into storage mode when you start eating more normally again, meaning that you put the pounds back on even faster each time you go through the cycle.

Most real experts state that one or two pounds of weight loss per week is reasonable, sustainable and healthy. While it doesn’t give us the immediate results we crave, it does give results that can be maintained.
