So Easy, Even Homer Simpson Can do It :)

There are few things tastier than homemade donuts, especially if they are freshly made. Trust me, store bought donuts hold no comparison to the old fashioned style donuts prepared in the home kitchen. Believe it or not, homemade donuts are really easy to make, and offer many unique variations.

Step 1: Gather the following ingredients and cooking supplies:

  • tongs or cooking sticks to turn the donuts
  • a deep fryer
  • 3/4 cup self rising flour
  • 1 small egg
  • 1/2 cup yogurt
  • A pinch of baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of rum
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • Cooking oil for frying the donuts
  • frosting or other toppings

Step 2: Combine the ingredients

Homemade Doughnuts

  • Start by combining the baking powder with the self rising flour and sugar. Mix the dry ingredients together.
  • After combining the dry ingredients, add in the egg, yogurt and rum. Mix well. The dough should be rather sticky.

Step 3: Roll out the dough

  • Sprinkle flour over a hard surface such as a countertop or kitchen table.
  • Use a wooden rolling pin to roll out the dough. The dough should be rolled out until it is about 3/8 inches thick.

Step 4: Shape the donuts

  • Use a circular cookie cutter or a water glass to cut circles in the dough. Apply pressure evenly to the entire cookie cutter or water glass, and be sure to press down hard enough that it goes all the way through the dough.
  • You can either have donuts that are solid circles, or use a smaller cookie cutter or water glass to cut out holes in the center of each donut.
  • Another option for shaping your donuts is to cut out several large circles, and then spread jelly on top of half of the circles. Use the other half of the circles to cover the jelly covered donut circles. Pinch the edges of the circles together so that the jelly cannot be seen.
  • Rub a little bit of oil over the donuts so that they do not dry while they rise

Step 5: Prepare the Donuts

  • Set the donuts on baking paper or wax paper
  • Cover the donuts with a layer of plastic wrap
  • Let the donuts rise for 20-30 minutes

Step 6: Fry the donuts

  • Heat oil in the deep fryer to 375 degrees
  • Use a thin metal spatula to pick up each donut and place it in the deep fryer
  • Make sure that every donut in the fryer floats on top of the oil. Don’t pack the donuts in too tightly.
  • After the donuts have fried on one side for about one minute, use a spatula to flip them onto the other side.
  • Fry the donuts until they are golden brown in color. Then, remove them from the oil.
  • Set the donuts on absorbent paper to let the excess oil drain from them.
  • After the donuts have cooled for several minutes, you may sprinkle sugar on them or add glaze to them.

Making Homemade Donut Glaze

The following optional donut glaze recipe can be used to create delicious glazed donuts.

Step 1: Gather the following ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups of powdered sugar

Step 2: Combine the ingredients

  • Mix the powdered sugar with the milk in a large bowl.
  • Add vanilla extract and mix the ingredients together again.

Step 3: Heat the donute glaze

  • Pour the glaze into a saucepan. Heat the glaze over low heat.
  • Remove the glaze from heat and allow it to cool for a few minutes

Step 4: Dip the donuts in the glaze

  • Dip each donut in the glaze, covering the top surface with the glaze
  • You may also use a teaspoon to spread the glaze evenly over the top of the donut, or even the entire donut if you wish
  • Once you’ve glazed the donuts, set them on absorbant paper and let the glaze set before serving.

Another option is to add filling to your donuts. Your filling can be jelly, jam, preserves, caramel, or whatever type of filling you desire. The ideal way to add filling is to use a special syringe made for baking. Put your filling in the syringe and then poke the end of the syringe into the donut. Push down on the end of the syringe lightly to add filling to the inside of the donut. Be sure not to add too much filling.
