Caramel Apple Recipe

Here are some easy to follow instructions for making caramel apples:

  1. The first thing you need to do is pick out what kind of apples to use. Most people like to use Granny Smith apples for making caramel apples because they have a tart flavor that makes for a good contrast to the sweet coatings you’ll be putting on the apple later. If you want sweet caramel apples all the way through you might want to use Golden Delicious. It all depends on your personal tastes. Use 10-12 of the apples you’ve chosen for a good sized batch of caramel apples.
  2. Wash your apples thoroughly and remove the stems. Make sure they are dry before proceeding to the next step.
  3. Insert wooden sticks into the stem holes of the apples. You can usually find these sticks at your local grocery, but popsicle sticks will also work if you can’t find the wooden apple sticks.
  4. The next thing you will need to do is melt your caramel. You can either use caramel candy pieces for this, or make your own caramel. The easiest way is to use caramel pieces. You’ll need 2 14 oz packages of caramel candy and 4 tablespoons of milk. Melt it all together in a bowl in the microwave for about 3 minutes and allow it to cool briefly.

  6. Once your caramel is warm (not scalding hot), roll each apple in the mixture. The easiest way to do this is by holding the stick and rolling the apple around in the bowl until the entire apple is covered in the caramel sauce.
  7. If you want plain caramel apples with no toppings, you will need to place each apple on wax paper after being coated in caramel sauce and put them in the refrigerator to set. It will take about 15 minutes for the caramel to set up.
  8. If you want to top your apples in peanuts or some other type of sweet candy don’t put them in the refrigerator just yet. After coating the apples in caramel you’ll need to have a bowl ready that contains your toppings.
  9. Some ideas for caramel apple toppings are peanuts, marshmallows, candy sprinkles, chocolate chips, chopped up candy bars, and Oreo pieces. There is no end to the possibilities! Just think about what you like and consider it for a topping. Chances are it will make your sweet treat even tastier.
  10. Once you’ve decided on your topping or toppings, it’s easy to apply them to the apples. Some toppings will be easier to apply by rolling the apple in the topping, and others may be easier to put on by hand. It just depends on what you’re using. Peanuts will go on easier by rolling and larger sized candy pieces like jelly beans or gummy bears will apply more easily if you use your hands.
  11. Now that your toppings are in place you can put the apples on wax paper in your refrigerator. Everything should be set up in about 15 minutes, but it’s a good idea to keep the apples in the refrigerator for longer to keep everything fresh before serving.
