Volunteer Work is Rewarding

Tuesday was my second day working at the free medical clinic. I did some computer work and had a company fax me an application for patients. The copy machine there is slower than molasses so I take the paperwork to the hospital and use their fancy machine. It spits out copies like lightning.

I volunteered to run and pick up medicine being donated by various doctors in the community while making my hospital run to make copies. She asked if I had a cell phone. I responded yes but I don't know the number. I looked in my person and see I had it wrote in my address book. I rarely use my phone and the only person that ever calls me is my husband.

I picked up meds at one doctor's office and proceeded to the hospital to make copies of the forms I needed. While there, she called and said another doctor had just called for a pick up of more medicine. The timing was perfect as I was just finishing with the copy machine. The doctor's office is only about 4 blocks from the hospital. I got there so quick, she had such a strange look on her face. (The clinic is 5 miles from the office)

I thanked the doctor and let her know how much these meds really helped our clients. She asked, "How many people are you serving right now?" YIKES!! (No Clue) I had to tell her, "I'm just the computer person over there. I can't stand the sight of blood, so I have nothing to do with that part of the program." She just laughed. I proceeded back to the car with meds in hand to see I had one missed call.

I called the office and it was her that had called. I've never learned out to check to see who has called on missed calls. Yep, another doctor had called in...one more med run for me. I was beginning to feel like a pharmacy with all these meds in my car.

I reached my third destination and was waiting patiently at the reception desk. I must have had a look on my face like "I'm here for free medicine." A nurse came out of a room and said, "Just a minute." She then brought out a huge bag of medicine. I asked, "How did you know I was here for this?". She said, "It was the way you were standing there." I thanked her and left. I'm still wondering what kind of stance I had. Oh well, mission accomplished.

When I got back to the office, the nurse was going through the bags...oooing and ahhhing. It figured it must be stuff they are really short on. I thought about clearance aisles in stores with all their junk. I was hoping these meds were not some obscure stuff people rarely used. I was glad to hear it was stuff they needed.

I put all my copies in my file and called it a day. I told the girls I'd see them next week. I had a feeling of satisfaction when I left. Helping someone I'll never meet. That's pretty cool!!

I'm helping myself with this weight loss doing this as well. When I'm working, I'm not eating. What a win-win situation.
