Walking off the Pounds with my Omron Pedometer

Today the UPS man left a package. It contained the two pedometers my son bought me for Christmas. He said I needed two in case I lost or broke one. I've never been too graceful.

Its an OMRON Premium Pedometer ...Model HJ-112. This model has dual sensor technology. It counts steps in Multiple postions. It accurately counts steps when it is placed in your pocket, bag, briefcase or clipped at your waist. It is easy to set. You input the time, your weight, your stride...making the calculations very accurate. It is very light weight and comes with a holder a spring clip and a pedometer strap with a clip for the strap as well.

The Omron Pedometer counts total steps, aerobic steps, duration of aerobic walk, calories consumed by walking and distance. It also has a 7-Day memory tracks your daily progress.

Aerobic steps means burning more calories, resulting in faster weight loss. The Omron Pedometer tracks aerobic steps separately, making it esier to attain your goals. Aerobic steps start counting after 10 minutes of continuous walking or running.

It comes with a one year warranty.

Here are a few comments of people that are using the Omron Pedometer:
  • Peter Chen of East Bay, CA says: I owned two pedometers before this one. So far this is the most accurate. I agree the belt clip does not hold very well. But with the tiny safety clip, you will not lose it eith on the belt or in the pocket. Three features I like most: being able to carry it other than on my belt, resetting the data at mid-nite, and 7-day memory. Buy it. It will be the best $20 you ever spent.
  • Amilee from the Deep South says: The minute you hold this pedometer, you know it is better than most you find in the stores. You can carry it in pockets, etc., and it still works. I have dropped mine so many times, it is ridiculous and it keeps on working. Last week I accidentally ran it through the wash. I took the battery out and let it dry out for a couple of days...and its working

Weight Watchers Free Advice in January

On January 2, 2006, Weight Watchers will be offering a toll-free hotline number for anyone who wants suggestions about weight loss. This will be available for the entire month of January, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The number to call is 1-888-ATIP4YOU.

They will offer dozens of suggestions and ideas to help with New Year weight loss resolutions. They will offer such tips as meeting details, articles and recipes during the month.

You will hear such tips as:
  1. Challenges Tips----Each challenge you face and deal with builds character and makes you stronger for the next time. Begin by resisting just one small food item per day or walking or walking around the block one more time ....it all adds up. Success breeds success. This tip was provided by Weight Watchers meeting leader Myra Coutee of Missouri City, Texas.
  2. Exercise/Fitness Tip----A little fitness can go a long way! Take your body measurements with a piece of ribbon. Let's face it.....we've seen the number on the scale and that's about all we can take. If we use pieces of ribbon for eachmeasurement, we don't have to face the numbers. A month later, using the same ribbon, re-measure and cut off the excess. This will show how much you have lost in each area, without knowing the "number" where you began. Tip provided by Weight Watchers meeting leader Kim Chmiel of Reisterstown,Maryland.
Remember, you don't get fit, you get fit for your family. Being fit can and should be a family commitment, and a family challenge. They learn from you, so set a good example.

Just Call Me Rudolph

I'm not sure what happened to me last night while I was sleeping, but the tip of my nose is bright red. Of course my husband had to point it out to me. I looked in the mirror and gasped.....what the heck!!! I tried washing it off........with no luck. Ugh!!

Since mom and I are going shopping, I put on makeup....the red mark still shows but not quite as bad. I was trying to remember if I had an dreams last night.....but can't remember any. Just another one of life's mysteries.

I told my mom, at least it doesn't look like a drinker's nose....as if that is any consulation. It's a good thing I'm not like one of my sisters....she'd be running off to the doctor's pronto.

With any luck, I won't run into anyone I know while shopping. Toodles..........off we go!!!

Tea consumption second only to water

Approximately 2.25 billion gallons of tea are consumed every year. I learned something new reading this article....ice tea has the same benefit as hot tea. I guess I never really thought much about it. For some reason, I always thought green tea was better for you than others...but I see that was a misconception as well.
The article called "The Diet Detective Guide to Green Tea," is a very informative question and answer article

Gastric bypass Surgery----A woman's story

The number of gastric bypass surgeries are on the increase each year. Here is a story of the problems a 35- year -old woman incurred after her surgery.

Research results on various weight loss programs

I wanted to share this article on the results of various studies done on the many weight loss programs out there.

I found the article to be quite interesting. I found myself gauging my past diets on all these results.
This time I'm kind of making it up as I go along. I feel better and more determined using my own methods for losing weight. In the past, I would have given up by now.........I use to tell myself, this is taking too long and just quit.

EFT(Emotional Freedom Technique)..a new weight loss method

This EFT is a new method used by doctors in the Energy Psychology field. I didn't even know there was a field named that. I guess I've lead a sheltered life. This method has been covered on the Discovery channel, CNN, and also been featured in Woman's World Magazine.

It's worth a look.

Is Obesity really linked to loss of sight?

We have all been told over and over that obesity is a contributing factor to diabetes, heart disease and various cancer. I was shocked to read today it is being associated with the loss of sight as well. This is just another incentive to stay on track and keep losing weight.

I've been wearing reading glasses the last 4 years. (when I hit 50) A few months ago, I had to increase the strength. I'm at a 1.50, but after reading this article...I wonder how long before that will change.

I haven't been to the gym since my mom was in the hospital. I plan on starting back the first of the year. I turn the big 55 on the 9th of January. I'm already searching out senior discounts. There has to be some advantage to hitting this age.

Mom just got up........so I'm off to fix her some breakfast.

The Sonoma Diet....no calorie counting

I figured this diet had to be developed in California...it goes in WAVES. one...two...three!! According to the author, Connie Gutterson, you don't have to give up any foods, you never track calories or keep score of points. She states you barely remember you're on a diet. Its called the Sonoma Diet.

I'm sitting here thinking, hmmmmmmm....what am I going to call this weight loss program I'm on. I live near Starved Rock State Park. Perhaps The Starved Rock Diet Plan would be fitting. I am such a procrastinator though. I better just make it a two page pamphlet and give it away. When I think about some of the diet books I've bought, I know I've never read past the first chapter on many of them.

A variety of Free weight loss programs

The word Free, always catches my eye. That word usually makes me leery as well. I have to say, I am a skeptic when it comes to things being Free.

As I was wondering around the internet, I came across The Ladies Home Journal. They have an articule which features various popular free weight loss diet plans. In this article, they also share the pros and cons of the programs.

They also have lots of recipes. It's an article worth reading.

Great tips on making New Year Resolutions work

I found a site called mygoals.com. It has some good tips on sticking with new year resolutions.

I've only got two.....continuing my weight loss and saving enough for my vacation to Singapore and Thailand.

New treatment to lose weight and quit smoking at the same time

Every year it seems the majority of people that make New Year's Resolutions, have weight loss or quitting smoking in their list. I came across this article about lasers being use to help people lose weight and quit smoking and had to share it.

My mom has been off cigarettes since her trip to the hospital. It's was a week yesterday since she had one. She's really doing well.......I'm so proud of her. Although she is 77, she is sharp as a tack and can be quite stubborn at times. I'm glad she has chosen to quit.

shopping...a way to lose weight

I'm still worn out from my shopping trip yesterday. I left the house at 5:45 am and didn't get home until 5:30 pm. I had to stop home twice and drop stuff off. My car is still filled to the max. I noticed people staring at my cart when I had it over flowing with paper towels. I'm just going to be having the xmas spirit in my kitchen all year long. They were only $1.50 for a double roll....less than half price. I bought 25 packages...so that comes to about a roll a week.

I noticed yesterday, people still had the xmas spirit. They were letting people with a few items in front to check out. I had to smile and this one family checking out in front of me. They were purchasing this huge electronic jeep. The little girl says to me, "My dad says he is buying this for Brady, but it's really for him to play with." I knew that had to be true...his wife told me Brady just turned 19 months old. It made me think about all the toys my husband has bought as well....such as the learning to fly game for the computer....the darn paddle thing was $90.00. But seeing the excitement on his face and hearing him cheer when he lands at Miegs Field in Chicago........that's priceless.

It's time for me to get back to some type of routine here. I'm heading off to make myself some green tea.

Weight Loss Wish

I wish I may
I wish I might
Have the wish
I wish tonight.
Continued motivation on this weight loss venture in which I've embarked. I keep telling myself, you didn't put it all on in one day, so it's not going to come off in one day either. I feel good I haven't gained any weight since I quit smoking. I've actually lost.

I got a new scale for Christmas. My son also told me he has gotten me a pedometer....I'm set to go. I'll be interested to see how many steps I actually walk around the house. I remember that one article I read said the average was between 600 and 3000 and that the goal should be 10,000.

Time to fix myself a glass of ice tea. I'm hoping all had a wonderful day with friends and family.

Midnight Mass......What happened?

I just got home from driving all over town. I can't believe there wasn't one church in this town having a midnight service. I drove by them all, catholic, lutheran, presbyterian, baptist and episcapal. I remember as a kid going to midnight mass with my parents and sisters. We'd have hot chocolate when we got home. Then we'd hurry to bed so Santa would come.

My sisters are both married and live in states far from here. My dad has passed away 3 years ago. I just wanted to relive a few of those memories at mass tonight. Perhaps next year there will be a midnight mass.

I am going to fix myself a cup of hot chocolate.......and remember those past Christmas's.

Xmas starting here today

I got up early today to do some cleaning before my sister and brother-in-law get here. It hardly seems fair...I clean for hours and hours and they stay only stay about an hour. At least I got my husband to hand 4 shelves for me this morning. I'm going to tell her she needs to come a little oftener so I can get him to do some of these projects. He's in a good mood, I just can't think of anything else right now. Gosh, that's how it always goes.....got the help but no work.

Since mom was in the hospital this week, it threw me totally off. I thought I had an extra day before Colleen got here to make cookies.....but...ooops....somehow I lost Thursday. So I just bought some cookies yesterday. It's probably better that way.....no temptation.

She is going to be here in about half hour so I better scoot and do these few dishes.

Mom's home

I got mom home from the hospital yesterday morning. I've made the appointment for the onocologist. These golden years just aren't so golden. I'm going to have to change her eating habits. She doesn't eat enought to keep a bird alive. Fixed her soup and a sandwich with pudding for lunch yesterday...and had her drink a glass of milk with it. She was fussing..but ate most of it.

This morning I made her bacon, eggs, and toast with a glass of milk and of course, her coffee. She was going to eat a powdered donut. She feels like she is being a nuisance...but I'm trying to convince her she isn't. She ate it all...I sure was glad to see that.

She is going to have to go to a pain clinic for her hip. That won't start until next month. I'm going to see if I can get her to go out today for a bit. I don't want her to lose the little muscle mass that she does have. I think she understands I'm not being mean.

Off I go, my husband forgot to take his medicine...gonna have to run it to his work.

What is wrong with mom

I'm on my way out the door to the hospital to see mom. They took more blood yesterday. I don't know what they are testing for. Today she is going to have an upper and lower GI. I sure hope something comes of these tests. She still has that awful pain in her side.

I was so exhausted when I got home last night. I fell asleep on the couch. Inevitably, the phone had to ring. I was sleeping so sound, the answering machine woke me up. Of course, they didn't leave a message. I don't know why people do that. I thought about getting that caller ID added to my phone. If the thing could say DONATION CALL, I'd get it. Those calls have been excessive lately. I even signed up for that no call online. Obviously, there are just too many so called charities out there.

There are probably as many money making schemes in that field as there are in weight loss. I'm waiting for the call from a weight loss charity......that would give me a good laugh.

Off I go....with my green tea in hand.

Brazilian Diet....people are raving

People are praising the Brazilian Diet. Four pills a day will melt the pounds away. There appears to be draw backs to this program.
  1. There are various heath issues. Some contain amphetamines.
  2. The cost....$100.00 a month is expensive for a diet supplement.
  3. The interaction of natural herbs with medicine a person may already be taking.

Flexitarianism....easy weight loss program

If you can live with less meat in your life...flexitarianism could be the plan for you. This plan allows meat and fish a couple of times a week with the remainder being vegetable dishes.

This plan would not work for me. I have to cook for two other people in the house. I won't cook separate meals for me/them. The older I get, the more I hate cooking. I never was a Betty Crocker/Susie homemaker type person.

Fight Holiday weight gain with free tools offered by Calorie-Count

Calorie-count.com is a popular free online weight loss website. They offer a cool toolbar which will keep track of such things as calorie intake, and expenditure. You can also communicate with other dieters.

What I really like is this website complements a variety of diets, such as weight watchers, south beach, and atkins.

At the bottom of the above mentioned article, the toolbar is available to download.

Study suggests seasonal eating habits

A study was done on 593 men and women from central Mass. which were approximately 48 years old, over weight or obese. This study showed more calories were consumed in the fall and winter.

I agree with the winter season, but I don't understand the reasoning for the increase during the fall. Thanksgiving couldn't count that much.....could it?

I'm faultering in my weight loss program

I had been into somewhat of a routine when I seriously decided to start losing weight. I'm not sure in subconsciously I throw myself off or what. I haven't been to the gym in 4 days. It seems something has come up everyday. When I reflect....I ask myself....are you sure you aren't just making excuses?

Yesterday was a bad day for me. My son went back home to Pennsylvania. I'm missing him already..... so is everyone else in the house....even the dog. They have such a special connection. The good news is, he called last night to let us know he made it home ok.

My mom has been ill the last couple of weeks and I took her to the emergency room at noon yesterday. They had us in the emergency room for 8 hours before they finally admitted her. Talk about putting in a full shift. WHEW I went up to her room and got her settled in. Her white blood count is high and they aren't sure why. I'm so worried about her. She is 77 years old but in relatively good health. Some prayers this way sure would be appreciated.

If you don't see me posting much for awhile....you'll understand why.

Lap Band Surgery/Gastric By-Pass Surgery

I've never really done any research on weight loss surgery. I don't like needles, knives or hospitals. So, surgery has never been an option for me.

Lap Band Surgery appears to be a less drastic measure in comparison to Gastric By-Pass Surgery. Here is a comparison of the two.

Diet Jokes

Laughter makes life so much better. There is nothing better than a good joke. I found this site on Diet Jokes and had to share it. The sad thing is, I can never remember the good ones. I usually remember about half the joke and inevitably, always forget the punch line.

Diet Bites Weight Loss Program/

The Diet Bites Weight Loss Program is absolutely free. I have had a hard time limiting my intake of bread. They have a recipe for Hunza bread. It sounds good, but I'm just not much of a baker.

I found another website called Let Bread beat the bluge. This site gives 5 days of recipes to lose weight. I like the idea of being able to eat bread with each meal.

I know if I keep restricting myself from too many things, I'll just give up. I'm still trying to teach myself MODERATION!!!

The Green Tea Diet

I drink green tea every morning. It has become a staple in my life. I'm wishing I could get rid of the bad habits as easily. I'm also hooked on spice drops. I started eating them when I was on a previous diet. They are a fat free food. I lost weight but I had the will power to limit my daily intake of them. This time...I have good days and bad days.

The Green Tea Diet website has some low fat recipes, exercise tips and also a free sample. It's worth a look.

Two New Skills to Maintain Weight Loss

Like so many people, I have been on that roller coaster ride of weight loss. I've lost over 100 pounds on two separate occasions. And here I sit, needing to lose 80 pounds. Obviously, I never had the skills to keep it off.

I blamed this last weight gain on moving, getting married, and retirement. It's always so much easier to push the blame on incidents that happen in my life. I know the bottom line is....I went back to my old eating habits. When I reflect on this last weight gain....I was able to keep the weight off for 3 years. I changed back so gradually.....on size at a time. Within that 4th year...I had gained all my weight back.

I was reading this article Two New Skills to Maintain Weight Loss. I'm going to have to follow this when I reach my goal. I find the older I get, the harder it is to lose the weight. I want this to be the LAST time.

Another weight loss book on the market

For just a mere $9.95, there is another weight loss book that just went on the market December 14th. The book is called The Diet Smart Plan and was written by Barry Sanders.

Personally, I don't have room for another diet book on my shelves. Perhaps this is the one for some people so wanted to share it.

I would love to hear from people that try this plan with succcessful or unsuccessful results.

Muscle toning/increasing flexibility with water aerobics

This past fall, I attended a water aerobics class. For one reason or another, I wasn't able to commit to the following session. I rationalized that I'm sure. I don't like to go outside with wet hair.....I'm sure that was my thought when I talked myself out of resigning.

There are many advantages to water aerobics. There is less stress on joints and a person is able to work out all muscle groups. This class gave me a better range of motion over a period of time. I can sure tell the difference. Even though I do go to the gym 5/6 days a week, the water aerobics helped diminish some of the aches and pains of these golden years. It also helped my flexibility.

It's nice to be able to feel better while toning muscles as well. Definitely killing two birds with one stone. Feeling better(physically and mentally) and looking better are common goal we all have.

Although I learned to swim at a young age, that is not a requirement to take this class. You work out in water waist deep. I had a girlfriend that was deathly afraid of water, after watching one class she decided to join.

With winter here.......my aches and pains have become more heightened. I am going to look into joining another one of these classes in January. I took mine at the YMCA. It was inexpensive. I'll just take my hair dryer with me!!

New Weight loss website

AOL and Good Morning America are launching a new website called AmericaTakesIt Off.com It will focus on diet advice. eDiets will be the site's only sponsor.

If you like entering sweepstakes.....eDiets is offering one on this site starting Jan 2nd. You can also sign up and share you weight loss experience with them. It is an imformative website. Check it out....you won't be disappointed.

Weight loss....10,000 steps a day

There is a non-profit group called Shape Up America. Their mission statement is to provide people with a solid scientific information on weight management. There are some studies that suggest walking 10,000 steps a day is necessary for weight management. It was interesting to read that the average person walks only between 600-3000 steps a day.

I still need to buy myself a pedometer. Perhaps Santa is going bring me one.

Fad Diets.......Questions and Answers

I came across an interesting article on the internet. A dietitian answers many question in regards to various diets. I'm not really sure what a "Fad" diet is.

I found it interesting to learn that a person can only lose an maximum of half a pound of fat/muscle a day. Anything over that is just water weight. That gives me a good understanding as to why it takes sooooooo long to lose these unwanted pounds. It also explains weight gain when it seems I've been on track with my diet.

Life....just one long learning process....gotta love it.

One pill to lose weight and quit smoking?

It's hard to believe there is a pill that can help you lose weight and quit smoking at the same time. According to an article in Web MD, there is such a pill.

I've been off cigarettes for 5 months without any pills. Prayer is what helped me to quit. I'm presently losing weight without pills. This is taking more than prayers. It's the life style change, the healthy choices I have to make daily, and the workouts at the gym 6 days a week. The bottom line is, I feel better.

For every extra pound of weight a person carries, it is an added 4 pounds of stress on a person's knees. I haven't reached the point where I can skip around the block yet, but I am getting faster on the treadmill.

GlaxoSmithKline has Application for OTC anit- obesity drug

The drug Xenical has been on the market since 1999 by prescription only. This pill blocks some fat from being absorbed by the body. It could be the first prescription drug to become available over-the counter.

According to the USA Today, the drug advisory committee will be reviewing GlaxoSmithKline application for this drug in late January.

I'm wondering what makes this drug different from any of the other weight loss prescriptions available that warrants it to be an over-the-counter drug.

Fish diet linked to bright minds in old people

Since I am part of the baby boomer group, studies done concerning my group interest me. Who would have thought that eating fish once a week could improve your mental functioning. Acording to the story in the New Zealand Herald, eating fish once a week could improve your mental function by 3 years and eating it twice a week, 4 years.

I remember as a kid growing up, we usually always had fish every friday for supper. It was a religious thing if I remember correctly....giving up meat once a week. I think perhaps I should be eating fish twice a week....there is a lot of fog in this old memory of mine.

Little Black Dress Diet Recipes

While reading the Daily Mail newspaper, I found 3 weeks of recipes for the Little Black Dress Diet. It is always easier to follow a diet when someone has the meals exactly spelled out.

I always find something I don't like in one of them, so that is why I have had to develop my own plan.

It is all about what works for an individual. The bottom line is achieving weight loss and sustaining it.

Obesity drug shows weight loss

Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. has been testing a new drug alled APD356. The studies have shown that weight loss has been successful in all three groups without side effects. This is one I am going to be watching.

I wonder how long before this goes on the market. One thing that sticks in my mind is something my dad told me long long ago........if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Just wondering...could this product be an exception to that rule?

The benefit of fiber in weight loss

Did you know fiber has no calories? I was reading an article by the National Fiber Council concerning all the benefits of fiber. After reading this, I'm definitely going to continue eating my oatmeal everyday.

I'm sure we all agree Oprah looks great. She had maintained her weight through exercise and a high fiber diet. I read this in another article.

A Successful Weight Loss Program

I love to read and hear about successful weight loss programs. A group of employees from Fleet Management in Florida, found one that worked for them. I think when you have a group effort, the encouragement given to one another is a real asset.

Weight loss is all in the Mind

I just got back from the gym after a two hour workout....using the treadmill, rowing machine, an arm machine (cant remember what it is called) and the stationary bicycle for a total of 875 calories.
I'm going to fix myself a bowl of Quaker Oatmeal.

I was reading an article in the Sydney Morning Herald called Weight loss is all in the Mind. I found it interesting that only 8 percent of people survey believed change of attitude and the way they thought was important to help them lose weight and keep it off. Most thought that just eating healthier and exercising were the key.

I'm wondering with this survey, if all the subjects interviewed were fat or thin.......or was it a mixed group. I think that may have something to do with that 8 percent figure. I'm thinking a fat person would say healthy eating and exercise were the key because they weren't doing it...or perhaps had tried for a week or two and gone back to their old habits.

Health Test Kits Match Diet to Health Risks through Genes

Michael Woods of the Toledo Blade, came across a great gift idea. For only $100, you can buy Sciona's Cellf Genetic Assessment. It is a DNA, diet and lifestyle assessment test. It gives individual recommendations based on the person's diet, lifestyle and unique genetic profile. I would call that having one's own personal trainer on a larger scale. I am going to be watching for results on this tool. Although I know what I need to work on, it would be interesting to have a genetic profile. The price is cheap enough when you compare it to lab charges at a hospital.

Best Weight Loss Plans call for Lifestyle change

I can remember growing up, always being told to clean my plate. It didn't matter if I was hungry. I always heard, you are a growing girl, your bones need all those "things". Or how about this one, You need to keep your strength up...I know I heard that one a million times. I remember slipping the liver to the dog, occasionally getting caught. When that happened, it was BAD....I had to eat a bigger piece. I learned pretty quickly how to be slick when passing food to the dog. My sister on the other hand, use to do the ole cough trick and spit it in her napkin. I use to smile to myself when she got caught. While she was replenishing her plate, I could slip mine to the dog.

I was reading this article in the floridatimes on best weight loss plans call for Lifestyle change. Everything in this article sounds like me. I figure I am at least aware of the changes I need to make and I am consciously working on them. Time to head off to the gym.

prevent muscle loss with weight resistance training

I do a variety of weights every other day at the gym. I have wondered if I would end up with arm muscles popping out of my blouse. This article on weight resistance states otherwise. I know I'd have a long way to go before that would happen but I do enjoy going to the gym and don't plan on quitting when I reach my goal.

I'm drinking a cup of green tea before going to the gym. I'm presently drinking Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange at the gym. There are only 5 calories and zero carbs. It is quite refreshing. I never realized that Crystal Light was a Kraft product. Although new is not always better, I give this product a thumbs up.

What to drink on the Zone Diet

While reading LiveArticles. org, I came across this article on the Zone Diet. Like all diets, drinking water is so important. I haven't tried this diet yet. Perhaps it is one that has worked for someone reading these posts. I'd love to hear about this program.

obesity .....high blood pressure

I was reading an article in the Medical News Today. It states that 40% of United States people between the ages of 55-64, are obese and 50% also have high blood pressure. I'll be 55 next month and I fit both categories. I've been taking my meds faithfully since the doc told me that I could have a heart attack if I kept up with the sparatic method I had been taking them. I figured once I retire, that awful stress was gone and I wouldn' t need them. Hmmm.....shows how much I know. I want to lose about 80 more pounds. Perhaps then my blood pressure will be normal with out medication.

I went to the gym again today...sure had to push myself out that door. I worked out for little over an hour on the treadmill...which amounted to 4 miles and 500 calories. I then workedout on the rowing machine for 20 minutes for 200 calories. The last machine I used was the bicycle for 150 calories which took me another 20 minutes. I finished my program with various leg and arm exercise machines which took me little over half hour.

I just got home.....had shopping to do. I've been on the go since 7 am. It really makes me wonder how I ever had time to work. It's break time now!!!!

weight loss greater for people weighing daily

I only weigh myself once a week. I think I would get to discouraged if I did it everyday. Here is a study though that states other wise.

Weight loss with Oatmeal

I've been eating oatmeal for breakfast. I sometimes will fix it for a snack as well. There are only 150 calories in a serving and it is quite filling. I remember when my youngest son was in high school, (he is now 26) he use to eat it for breakfast and also as a snack when he got home from school. He lost quite a bit of weight.

I was doing some research on oatmeal and found the Quaker Oatmeal site to have a lot of useful information.

Exercise and Fitness gifts for the holidays

According to Amy Bertrand of the St Louis Post-Dispatch, here are a few of her gift ideas for the exercise conscious person. Whether you are buying for the experienced exerciser or the fitness newbie, you can't go wrong with a gift that will make someone healthier and fitter.

Some gift ideas never go out of style--gift certificates to a spa, a pedometer, workout clothes, a fitness ball--but there are several new and exciting gifts out there this year.

Here are a few of them:
    1. DASHTRACK ------This device comibines the best of a sports watch, pedometer and heart-rate monitor, all rolled into one. This is offered by a company called WalkStyles that specializes in products for walkers, accurately tracks daily steps, distance, calories burned from walking, heart rate and speed in miles per hour, and all in a sleek, small, attractive device.
    2. ADUSTABLE DUMBELLS-----Tired of having several different sizes of dumbells in your hourse? These SelectTech adjustable dumbells from Bowflex give users the versatility of a whole rack of free weights in a one space-saving set. With the model, your dumbells can go from 5 to 52.5 pounds: the 220 model goes from 2.5 to 20 pounds.
    3. WIRELESS PEDOMETER TREADMILL-----The horizon WT 950 Wireless Pedometer Treadmill is a great gift idea for walkers who are looking for extra motivation. It gives you "credit" toward your workout for steps you've taken all day. Wear the pedometer (included with the treadmill) during the day, then wirelessly transmit the steps you've already walked. The treadmill calculates the steps needed to reach your goal and adjusts your workout accordingly.

Is there a weight-loss resistance gene?

I actually have never thought about a weight-loss resistance gene. I always contributed it to a slow metabolism. I have a son 31 years old that can eat like a horse but is so thin. I actually tell him that he needs to gain some weight. He tells me he tries but can't put on a pound. Perhaps there is a weight-gain restance gene for a select few.

We got lots and lots of snow yesterday. It's only 8F and the roads don't look good. I may try going to the gym later. I'm going to give the snow plow time to come by. After my donut diet yesterday, I NEED the gym.

Donut Diet

Today is a bad day for me. I skipped the gym and ate donuts. My son came home to visit, so I went to the bakery this morning. The donuts all looked so good...and that smell......yummm!! I had such a sugar high and then.......boom ......that big drop.....I'm ready for a nap. This shows me how much better I feel when I eat right and exercise. Tomorrow I'll get back on track.

We are suppose to be getting 3-6 inches of snow. Since my husband does uses the snow blower, out of the following calorie burners, I'll just be doing the first two.
Typical calories burned in 30 minutes:
  1. sleeping 36
  2. sitting quietly 40
  3. watering lawn or garden 61
  4. mowing lawn (riding)101
  5. trimming shrubs (power) 142
  6. raking 162
  7. bagging leaves 162
  8. weeding 182
  9. mowing lawn (push mower) 243
  10. shoveling snow 243
  11. shoveling heavy snow 364

After Training Program Men Easier to Please with Regard to Body Image than Women

As I read the article concerning Body Images, I wondered...why are us women always so critical of ourselves. I actually think it covers more than just Body Image. I have found the older I get, the more tolerant I have become. I'm not quite as fussy with my housekeeping or having my hair in fixed when I'm running to the grocery store.

Here is the article I wanted to share:
It doesnt take much to make a man feel satisfied with his body: a look in the mirror and a sense of well-being is sufficient. For women however, changes in body image need to be supported by hard physical evidence. The findings surprised the study's author, Kathleen Martin Ginis, associate professor of kinesiology at McMaster University.

"We thought--obviously incorrect--that womens body image would improve more than men's as they progressed through the strength training study," Martin Ginis said. "We were surprised by the responsiveness of men's body image to strenth training. Men's body image improved as much as women's. Yet interestingly, men didn't care about numbers--how much weight they actually lost or how much muscle they actually gained had no bearing on their body image; if they simply felt more muscular and stronger, or if their pants were looser, that was good enough to improve their body image. But when it came to the women, feeling thinner and stronger were only part of the story. The women that had the greatest improvements in body image
were those who saw actually increases in the amount of weight they could lift at the gym."

This study followed men and women for 12 weeks between the ages of 18-29. They had up to this point, led sedentary lives. When I read that, it really made me wonder. At those ages, I was busy going to school, working full time, and raising kids. I dont understand how people could be sedentary in that age range.

Diet Spotlight recipe

I came across this article on a low fat/carb recipe. I think I'll try this pork chop recipe tomorrow night. It also mentions a cookbook for 14.95. I'll have to think on that one first. It might just be a book I could add to all my other diet books. I'll check it out at the book store. I have always been one that preferred simply recipes.

Weight Loss equal Financial Gain

It ceases to amaze me, the various studies that take place. It saddens me to see that women that are overweight get paid less than women who are a size 8. I can't say that happened to me. But when I reflect back on my size 10 days, I sure was given some gravy job assignments. I equated that with my knowledge back then. This article makes me wonder if it really was something else.

At the bottom of the article, Abundance and Wealth there is a link to a free ebook, 10 Terrific Tips for Holiday Weight Loss.

It's another cold one here today...starting the day at -5F. I'm warming the car before I head to the gym.

Quick Start Weight Loss DVDs Help Establish Good Habits and Raise Self-Esteem

I realize not everyone has time to go to the gym. There are various programs that one can do right in their own home. A variety of DVD's are mentioned on the Quick Start Weight Loss DVDs Help Establish Good Habits and Raise Self-Esteem website.

When the snow starts flying, I think I'll try some of these. The older I get, the more I hate driving in bad weather. I fear I'm becoming that old lady on the highway I use to mumble about.

Weight in day...still losing weight

I got on the scale this morning and low and behold, I lost 3 pounds this past week. I've gone to the gym faithfully 6 days this week, working out for a minimum of an hour and half. I find myself thinking before I eat. I ask myself, am I really hungry? (I so often just eat because something looks good or I like the taste) I still have my mints, but I have put them on the other side of the room, so I have to get off the couch to get any. That little walk makes me think, how bad do you really want them. So I've cut back on them.

I'm sure feeling good. It's another cold day here...7F. I'm warming up the car before I take off for the gym.

The No-Diet Diet

How would you like to surround yourself with all the junk food you love so much and still lose weight. The No-Diet Diet this the program that does just that. It is called intuitive eating. You eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. It sounds simple enough.

I've always had a problem with eating after 7 pm. I turn into a chow hound until bedtime. I'm doing better but it is such a struggle for me. I don't think this type diet would work for me. It's worth mentioning though....he lost over 50 pounds.

Brrrrr........it's only 5 F. I'm in the process of warming up my car before I head off to the gym. I'm going to finish my green tea and make a mad dash for the car.

100 Ways to Keep on a Diet

Linda Spangle has written a book titled, "100 Days of Weight Loss: The Secret to Being Successful on Any Diet." It has been proven successfully in helping dieters get through the first 100 days, the period when 95 percent of any diet fails.
A few suggestions are:
    1. When craving a specific food, write it down in a notebook, and tell yourself you'll have it later. Writing helps tame cravings.
    2. Follow the clock. The body needs refueling every 3 to 5 hours. Use the clock to take meals and healthy snacks.
    3. Make a committment to eat in the presence of at least one person, even if it's a midnight snack.
    4. Determine if the food is a healthy food such as whole grain, fruits, vegetables, and low fat meats, or filler such as snack foods or convience foods.

maitaining weight with a shot everyday?

I just read an article about leptin receptors. It seems I don't have many since I gained the weight back I had lost twice before. I'm not one that likes needles so don't see this as an option for me. I just thought I'd share the article. The next time you see someone that can eat like a horse and never gain a pound, you will know they have lots of leptin receptors.

It's a cold day here, only 9 F. I'm warming up the car to go to the gym. I'll finish my green tea and take off. Yesterday I bought myself a new shirt, a size smaller and it fits perfect. I bought pants too, they fit too... but I like to wear my pants loose when working out, so I'm still wearing my old ones.

Just to let you folks know, Fashion Bug is having a GREAT sale on Sunday. The clerk let me put stuff back yesterday, and is going to call me Saturday to remind me. The price just right stuff is going to be on sale too which the clerk told me, never happens. I'm not sure if this sale applies to the online clothes...but I'm sure a phone call or an email to them would answer that question.

5 critical points to losing weight

I was reading this article on the 5 critical points to losing weight. It makes sense. If he can lose 300 pounds with such an attitude, I should be able to lose 100. As I read the article, I said to myself, I'm doing that, I'm doing that.....I'm doing that.

I'm sitting here wondering, is the last 15 pounds going to be as hard to lose as the first 15? I'm hoping by then, I have become use to eating in a healthy way. I did eat my fresh red raspberries last night for a snack, but I also ate some Junior chocolate mints...ugh.

I'm finshing my green tea and then I'm off to the gym. I have to remember to take my Ipod. I forgot it the other day and had to turn around and come home to get it.

another good diet.....Mediteranean diet

Since we all vary in things we like and dislike, I enjoy sharing various diets I find. The Mediteranean diet seems to work. I never was one to use olive oil but I am going to try it. I know success is in healthy eating in moderation and daily exercise. It would be so nice to find one diet that just fits my niche in life.

I've met a lot of nice people at the gym. I had a woman ask me how long I worked out on the treadmill. She was surprised when I told her over an hour a day. When she finished her treak on the treadmill, she said, "You inspired me and I walked an extra 10 minutes today." I must say, that sure made me feel good.

I think about all the people I have tried to help in one way or another. It is nice to be able to help someone unintentionally. It makes me wonder........have I don't much of that for people over the years? I sure hope so. I always figured that was why God put me on this earth....to help others.
